Charles Troy Returns to The York

A multimedia presentation on the making of an iconic Broadway musical

Fiddler on the Roof title slide

The stories of Yiddish writer Sholom Aleichem seemed an unlikely subject for a musical, and certainly of limited appeal. We'll see how genius director-choreographer Jerome Robbins guided his creative team to find universality in the material, and how they made a "Jewish musical" that struck a responsive chord in virtually every country in the world.

Charles Troy has entertained audiences at The York in person with his The Creation of…presentations on My Fair Lady, Camelot, Gypsy and Funny Girl, as well as presentations on Cole Porter and Jerry Herman. During the pandemic, he has converted his extensive repertoire into more than 50 videos, suitable for virtual events. Charles is based in Chicago and has played San Francisco, Scottsdale, Sarasota, South Florida, and many other venues all over the country. Check him out at www.charlestroy.com.

The presentation runs approximately 90 minutes and will be followed by a 30-minute interview with cast members Austin Pendleton and Joanna Merlin, the original Motel and Tzeitel, who share delightful stories of how they got their parts, working with Jerome Robbins, and the show's legendary out-of-town troubles before the Broadway triumph.

Available for viewing on Broadway On Demand on Wednesday, April 28, 2021 beginning at 7:00PM.

An Archival Video of York's Biggest event of 2020!

Sheldon Harnick with

Liz Callaway, Rebecca Luker, Karen Ziemba

Join us for virtual premiere of An Evening with Sheldon Harnick and Friends, the last scheduled event at The York prior to the shutdown in March 2020. This special concert celebrates (and features) one of the most illustrious songwriters of the American musical theatre: three-time Tony Award winner, Pulitzer Prize winner, and Oscar Hammerstein Award recipient Sheldon Harnick. Mr. Harnick is joined on stage by Tony Award nominee Liz Callaway (Miss Saigon), Tony Award winner Karen Ziemba (Contact), and Rebecca Luker (The Sound of Music) in her last stage appearance. The music director is Jeffrey Saver, with Special Guest Margery Grey Harnick.

An Evening with Sheldon Harnick and Friends is an intimate evening giving audience members some of the celebrated songs Mr. Harnick has created in his astonishing 60+ year career, it includes his collaborations with composers such as Richard Rodgers, Joe Raposo, Michel Legrand, and—of course—Jerry Bock. Sprinkled with some behind-the-scenes anecdotes from such hit shows as Fiorello!, She Loves Me, and Fiddler on the Roof, as well as the lesser-known Tenderloin, The Rothschilds, Rex, and Dragons.  A rare treat for musical theater buffs of all ages, this event was created by Mr. Harnick especially for The York Theatre. This evening is presented under the auspices of the Theater Authority, Inc.

Leading into the evening, James Morgan, York Producing Artistic Director, shares a special birthday conversation with Sheldon and Margery.

Streaming on Broadway On Demand beginning Friday, April 30, 2021 at 7:00PM and available on demand through Friday, May 14, 2021.
